In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Commonly known as IVF, In-Vitro Fertilisation is a popular assisted conception method. It involves taking hormone medications or injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs than usual. These eggs are then extracted and fertilized with a sperm sample to create embryos. Finally, the embryos are transferred to the uterus.

When to consider IVF?

If you’ve been trying to conceive for over 12 months (or 6 months if you're over 35) without results, IVF may help identify and address the underlying cause.

If your egg count is lower than expected for your age, IVF with or without egg stimulation can support conception.

When sperm count, motility, or morphology are below optimal levels, IVF with ICSI (a type of IVF) can improve chances of fertilization.

Multiple miscarriages may signal issues with embryo quality, implantation, or genetics—IVF can offer answers and control.

Sometimes, everything looks "normal"—but pregnancy still doesn’t happen. IVF provides greater clarity and control when other methods haven’t worked.

Who will benefit from IVF?

  • Ovulation challenges

    Women with fertility challenges

If you have irregular ovulation, PCOS, endometriosis, or blocked fallopian tubes, IVF helps bypass these challenges by fertilizing and transferring embryos directly into the uterus.

  • Male factor (Sperm issues)

    Men with infertility issues

If sperm count, motility, or quality is a concern, IVF with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) can increase the chances of fertilization by selecting and injecting the healthiest sperm directly into an egg.

  • Unexplained infertility

    Couples w/ unexplained infertility

If you've been trying to conceive without success and clear medical explanation, IVF provides a structured high-precision approach to pregnancy, optimizing every step of the process.

How does it work?

Every IVF journey begins with an in-depth fertility assessment with one of our fertility doctors to review your personal and family medical history, discuss your family-building goals, and create a personalized treatment protocol tailored to your body and fertility needs.

For about 10–12 days, you’ll take hormone injections to help your ovaries grow multiple eggs instead of the one your body typically releases each month. You’ll have regular ultrasounds and blood tests to monitor progress and adjust medications if needed.

Once your eggs are ready, they are collected through a short, sedation-assisted procedure. It takes around 20 minutes and you can usually go home the same day. The goal is to retrieve as many mature, healthy eggs as possible.

Your eggs are then combined with sperm (partner’s or donor’s) in the lab. Fertilized eggs grow into embryos over the next 3–5 days under close monitoring by embryologists. Not all eggs fertilize or grow into embryos—and that’s completely normal.

One healthy embryo is selected and gently placed into your uterus using a thin catheter. This is a painless, non-surgical step. You’ll rest briefly and go home the same day.

About 10–14 days later, you’ll do a blood test to check for pregnancy. If positive, the clinic may suggest further monitoring. If not, your care team will help you understand next steps, which may include using frozen embryos or adjusting the plan.

Any extra good-quality embryos can be frozen for future use. This gives you more options without needing to repeat the whole process.

Frequently Asked Questions

IVF is often recommended when other methods like timed intercourse or IUI haven’t worked, or if there are specific fertility issues like low egg reserve, blocked fallopian tubes, severe male factor infertility, or if you’re a same-sex couple or single parent by choice.

IVF involves injections, scans, and a short egg retrieval procedure under sedation, but it’s generally well-tolerated by most women. Long-term risks are very low when done under the care of a qualified clinic. Some temporary side effects like bloating or mood swings can occur, but they are manageable. Your doctor will keep a close eye on your hormone levels to make the process as smooth and safe as possible.

IVF success depends on age, egg and sperm quality, underlying health issues, and how your body responds to stimulation. In India, average success rates per IVF cycle are around 30–50% for women under 35, and gradually decline with age. If the first cycle doesn’t work, your doctor may suggest adjustments or using frozen embryos in future cycles.

IVF can be intense—both physically and emotionally. Hormonal medications can affect your mood, and the process involves multiple appointments and waiting periods. That said, having the right support system—whether it's a fertility counsellor, your partner, or a care team like Arva’s—can make a big difference.
